Diet For Gum Disease - The Mighty Lettuce Weighs in on Gum Disease

Many patients at our Lower Manhattan cosmetic dental practice adhere to a low-carb diet, avoiding bread and other carbohydrate-heavy foods to shed pounds or maintain their weight while also reaping various health benefits. Interestingly, recent research from the University of Freiburg in Germany links a restricted carbohydrate diet to improved gum health. The 4-week study involved 15 participants, with 10 in the experimental group and 5 in the control group. While the control group continued with their regular diets, the experimental group followed a menu rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins C & D, and low in carbohydrates.

Prior to the study, baseline gum evaluations were conducted for each participant, with weekly measurements taken throughout the research period. Interestingly, while plaque levels remained consistent across all participants regardless of diet, there was a notable 50% reduction in inflammatory markers among those in the experimental group compared to the control group. This underscores the potential of a diet low in refined carbohydrates and high in essential nutrients to significantly mitigate gum inflammation.

In addition to these findings, certain foods are known for their ability to prevent gum disease, such as lettuce. Lettuce contains folate, which helps protect enamel and reduce the risk of gum disease. Its crisp texture can also stimulate saliva production, aiding in the natural cleansing of the mouth.
